This project formed Ian’s Masters’ thesis at the University of Bath. Its objective was to design and implement the future initiatives for automated control systems in racing submarines at the Bath University Racing Submarine Team (BURST).
Research included literature reviews of automation and human-computer interaction, as well as interviews and workshops with past, present and future submarine pilots.
Development areas chosen included short-term and long-term interventions - improved mechanical control systems and cockpit layout, and determining the future hardware platform, prototyping it, and developing a data acquisition system to inform the future control system.
The mechanical control system and cockpit layout were prototyped in a range of materials from cardboard to laser-ply, and incorporated into the 2013 boat Menrva. The future system architecture and data acquisition system was developed in MATLAB, Arduino and Processing.
